1+1: THE CLEAN SLATE

1+1: THE CLEAN SLATE

Having completely clean skin is the foundation for having great skin, and this dynamic duo gives you the deep clean result of a spa treatment at home... no appointment necessary.

FOREO’s top of the line LUNA 2 Professional ultrasonic cleansing brush generates up to 8,000 transdermal sonic pulses per minute for exceptional cleansing. This Swedish innovation is an upgraded version of the original device with a larger surface area for cleansing the skin, and is suitable for all skin types. Dermatologist Dr. Noëlle Sherber recommends silicone cleansing brushes specifically, because "the microscopically smooth surface can be kept completely clean and won’t harbor bacteria which can lead to breakouts and skin inflammation."

[section single_product=foreo-luna-2-professional]

The Honey Mud gives an experience unlike any other, with a sweet scent from natural oils of macadamia nut, cocoa, sweet orange, ylang-ylang and vanilla. These oils, along with raw honey and a blend of clays, will leave even the driest skin feeling healed and nourished. This dual purpose cleanser can either be massaged into damp skin and rinsed clean or applied to dry skin for 10-20 minutes as a mask. As an at-home deep cleansing treatment Dr. Sherber recommends applying it as a mask, dampening the skin, and then buffing with the FOREO to remove completely and enhance absorption of the active ingredients.

5 FAVORITES: IN-FLIGHT ESSENTIALS

5 FAVORITES: IN-FLIGHT ESSENTIALS

Dry airplane air and traveling between climates can be a recipe for skin that's out of sorts. Here are some travel skincare tips I share with patients, as well as product picks to keep with you in your carry-on. These essentials include gentle but effective hand sanitizer and blemish spot treatments, as well as solid cleansers and moisturizers which not only won't spill in transit and make a mess of your luggage but also won't count towards the infamous TSA "ziplock" baggie of liquids.

[section asset=question-1.png]

Eve Lom Cleanser

[section single_product=eve-lom-cleanser-50ml]

This cleanser, described by Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief of Vogue, as "probably the best cleanser in the world," is remarkably effective. The proprietary blend of oils (Egyptian chamomile, eucalyptus, clove, and hops) cleanses deeply because oil dissolves best in oil: this melts away even waterproof sunscreens, which is great for active vacations. The formulation emulsifies and turns milky when removed with the accompanying muslin cloth and warm water, leaving skin feeling soft and perfectly clean. One of the common post-travel skin concerns I see among patients is skin irritation from hotel towels, so I suggest traveling with these muslin cloths or your own washcloths if you have sensitive skin since hotel detergents can be harsh and cause eczema from the commercial-grade chemical residue.

[section asset=question-2.png]

Frais Everyday

[section single_product=frais-everyday]

Hand sanitizer is a must when traveling, since saying healthy needs to be a priority. The FDA has now banned antibacterial ingredient triclosan from rinse-off hand soaps, but, interestingly, not from leave-on hand sanitizers. Triclosan can cause hand eczema and I recommend that it be avoided. This Australian formula is triclosan-free, and instead relies on sugarcane alcohol. To balance out the drying effects of the alcohol, it incorporates a blend of natural essential oils (ginger, tangerine, lemon myrtle, niaouli, orange, basil, grapefruit, and cardamom), which make it pleasant to use without lessening its efficacy.

May Lindstrom The Blue Cocoon

[section single_product=may-lindstrom-the-blue-cocoon]

This unique product is a facial oil in solid form so it is another great carry-on product that won't count as a liquid in your carry-on. It is handmade in L.A. without preservatives or synthetic fragrance, and so is excellent for sensitive skin types, and derives its distinctive color from blue tansy oil which has renowned soothing properties. In an interview with SHERBER+RAD, May Lindstrom said that The Blue Cocoon "was the formula I dreamed about my whole life and the one I am most proud of and personally attached to" and it has garnered an intensely loyal following based on the intensely nourishing results it delivers. You can apply it anywhere that needs extra moisture, such as hands, cuticles, or lips, and can reapply throughout the flight if skin feels parched. It is also an excellent vacation companion to soothe chapped skin whether from skiing or jetskiing.

Indie Lee Blemish Stick

[section single_product=indie-lee-blemish-stick]

The airplane restroom has such notoriously harsh light and can make it tempting to attempt self-surgery on nonexistent blemishes that appear in the mirror there. This spot treatment is a much better idea. It's an invisible quick-drying clear gel with a wand applicator that can be dotted on spots, and the formula is so sheer that it can be applied over or under makeup. The potent blend of salicylic and glycolic acids, along with natural acne-fighters zinc, camphor, witch hazel, and sulfur, shrinks acne quickly and effectively without over-drying the skin and causing a peeling spot which can be more unsightly than the blemish itself. It's always good to have a spot treatment on hand while you're traveling in case a blemish arises as an unwelcome visitor, and this one is discrete enough to keep with you: just be sure not to confuse the chic packaging with a lip gloss!

[section asset=question-5.png]

Crème de La Mer

[section single_product=creme-de-la-mer]

This moisturizer has a legendary following due to its skin-soothing properties, and, since it's a solid texture at room temperature it's an ideal choice for your carry-on. Sea water minerals are very calming to the skin, and this formula combines them with a blend of oils - including sesame seed oil and eucalyptus leaf oil - which is renowned for its ability to repair the skin's barrier, so this is good for cushioning the skin against arid airplane cabin air. To apply, be sure to warm the product between your fingers until it becomes translucent and then press gently into the skin. You can apply a generous additional layer mid-flight if skin feels dry and you'll be amazed how much skin will absorb before landing.

5 FAVORITES: WINTER SKINCARE

5 FAVORITES: WINTER SKINCARE

In winter, skin becomes more prone to dryness and irritation due to cold temperatures and low humidity. Here are some tips to keep skin looking its best when there's a chill in the air... or even major wind chill.

[section asset=question-1.png]

La Mer Revitalizing Hydrating Serum

[section single_product=la-mer-revitalizing-hydrating-serum]

Cold air is also dry air, and so hydration (meaning adding water to the skin) is key to winter skincare. One of the ways to help hydrating products work best in the winter is to place a humidifier near your bed so that they can bind water to the skin overnight. Similarly, seal off your bathroom door while showering or bathing and apply your skincare in the steamy air to harness the humidity. This serum uses new technology to deliver small beads of hydration into the skin effectively with a light texture that layers well with other products, and soothes dry skin with La Mer's proprietary complex of seawater minerals.

[section asset=question-2.png]

Natura Bissé Diamond Extreme Oil

[section single_product=natura-bisse-diamond-extreme-oil]

One of the best ways to transition your skincare into the winter if you don't want to revamp your products entirely with the change of season is to mix oil into your cream or lotion moisturizer to make it more nourishing. Blending in a few drops of this lightweight mix of chia, carrot, calendula, and amaranth oils from Spain will make any moisturizer more winter-appropriate. This can also be applied as a serum layered under your moisturizer, or patted on dry areas midday if skin becomes chapped from the cold.

[section asset=question-3.png]

Caudalie Divine Body Oil

[section single_product=caudalie-divine-oil]

This French blend of grape, sesame, hibiscus, and argan oils with a lovely warm scent can be applied to body, cuticles, and even hair. Clinical studies comparing vegetable-based oils to mineral oil (as is found in baby oil) show that vegetable oils are more effective moisturizers for eczema-prone skin, so if your skin is persistently dry or itchy look for vegetable oils on the ingredient list. Apply body moisturizer while skin is still damp from the shower to trap water next to the skin for best results, and you can use this as a body oil or cocktail it by mixing it into body cream.

[section asset=question-4.png]

La Mer The Body Crème

[section single_product=la-mer-the-body-creme]

A good rule when shopping for body treatments for dry winter skin is to pass by any products in a pump, and to go straight for those packaged in a tube or a jar. This is because, in order to pass through a pump, lotions will have a high water content to thin the formula which makes them generally insufficiently rich in oil to soothe really dry skin. The formulation of this pudding-textured cream was inspired by in-spa seaweed wrap treatments that leave skin deeply hydrated and moisturized and has earned a loyal following for calming even super dry skin.

[section asset=question-5.png]

Caudalie Premier Cru The Elixir

[section single_product=caudalie-premier-cru-the-elixir]

Harsh weather isn't incompatible with active skincare ingredients, but skin can be sensitized by overly aggressive products in harsh weather. In particular, avoid serums containing alcohol since these can dehydrate the skin at a time of year when skin is already prone to dryness from the low humidity in the air. Also, serums with heavy silicones (apply them to the back of your hand and see if water beads up) will form a film that prevents optimal absorption of moisturizer that you layer on top. This fast absorbing oil-based serum incorporates antioxidants viniferine, resveratrol, and grapeseed polyphenols which defend against free radical damage from UV exposure and pollution.

5 FAVORITES: POST-PROCEDURAL PRODUCTS

5 FAVORITES: POST-PROCEDURAL PRODUCTS

The holidays are a very popular time for cosmetic procedures, whether a skin brightening laser treatment to get party-ready or surgery to take advantage of time off to recover - here are dermatologist Dr. Noëlle Sherber's recommendations to soothe healing skin.

[section asset=question-1.png]

La Mer The Concentrate

[section single_product=la-mer-the-concentrate]

The Concentrate has become a top selling La Mer product in South Korea, the country leading the world with the most plastic surgeries per capita. It is enriched with seawater minerals, and since blood and seawater have very similar mineral composition this may account for La Mer's renowned healing properties. This is a silky serum enriched with high quality silicones which I find calms redness post-laser and helps scars fade post-surgery. The rich texture wears beautifully like a primer under makeup and is suitable for delicate skin on the eyelids as well as the face.

[section asset=question-2.png]

Biocorneum+

[section single_product=biocorneum]

Topical silicones are proven through numerous studies to improve scar healing, resulting in flatter, softer, and smoother scars. Biocorneum+ is an FDA-cleared liquid that dries to form a thin clear sheet of flexible silicone over a healing scar to keep the area hydrated while protecting it from UV exposure with SPF30. When Angelina Jolie underwent bilateral mastectomies, she shared that she applied this twice daily for 12 weeks to optimize scar healing. My husband, plastic surgeon Dr. Ariel Rad, often recommends a similar protocol to his breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery patients.

[section asset=question-3.png]

Natura Bisse S.O.S. Instant Rescue

[section single_product=natura-bisse-s-o-s-instant-rescue]

Natura Bissé developed this powerfully soothing serum to fight inflammation in the skin, incorporating natural calming ingredients such as calendula, arnica, propolis, and aloe vera. I often apply this in my treatment room after laser or injectable procedures since it calms redness rapidly, and this is a great at-home companion to these procedures. Men often prefer the lightweight texture of this sheer gel to richer post-procedural balms

[section asset=question-4.png]

Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S. Thirst-Quenching Serum

[section single_product=caudalie-vinosource-s-o-s-thirst-quenching-serum]

In clinical studies, this combination of polyphenol-rich grape water and hydrating hyaluronic acid reduced skin redness rapidly as compared to untreated skin following exposure to lactic acid. I often apply this to patients' skin following chemical peels or laser, and particularly recommend it to those with oily skin who want an oil-free product, and also suggest it after surgery when skin can feel dry and irritated from the prep solution used to sanitize skin pre-operatively.

[section asset=question-5.png]

SK-II Facial Treatment Mask

[section single_product=sk-ii-facial-treatment-mask-9-masks]

This sheet mask has the highest concentration of Pitera™ of any product in the SK-II line. Its mix of vitamins and minerals derived from the sake fermentation process is deeply hydrating and visibly reduces redness, which is why I recommend it after laser treatments to many patients who need redness to fade quickly so that they can be event-ready. For post-surgery patients, the masks can be chilled in the refrigerator and applied cold to help reduce swelling.

1+1: THE PERFECT RED LIP

1+1: THE PERFECT RED LIP

This duo is our favorite for creating the perfect red lip.

Verso Lip Serum plumps lips on contact by super-hydrating them. Dermatologist Dr. Noëlle Sherber added this to our edit of lip treatments because "this silky balm plumps with hyaluronic acid without relying on irritants as many other formulas do. Retinyl retinoate, a modern formulation of retinol, also stimulates collagen to build density and plush volume in the lips over time, so you get both instant and longterm results."

[section single_product=verso-lip-serum]

TOM FORD Lip Color has become an iconic formulation because its specially treated color pigments are blended to deliver pure color, and it is ultra-creamy due to a moisturizing mix of soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and Chamomilla flower oil. Our makeup artist in residence, Enrique Valentino, calls Cherry Lush "the perfect festive, and smile-brightening, shade." It is our go-to for the perfect red lip for the holidays.

RHINOPLASTY (NOSE JOB) IN WASHINGTON DC

RHINOPLASTY (NOSE JOB) IN WASHINGTON DC

DR. RAD IS THE BEST RHINOPLASTY PLASTIC SURGEON IN DC

Rhinoplasty (or "nose job") is a popular plastic surgery among men and women of all ages. There are many benefits of rhinoplasty: in addition to reducing a hump or refining the tip, the results of rhinoplasty can improve your self-confidence and breathing.  When choosing a plastic surgeon, ensure that s/he is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and s/he has the ability to perform rhinoplasty skillfully.  As such, credentials are important: Princeton and Duke educated and Johns Hopkins trained, Dr. Ariel Rad is Assistant Professor and former Director of Aesthetic Surgery at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Rad specializes in facial cosmetic surgery, particularly rhinoplasty, and Dr. Rad is considered one of the top rhinoplasty surgeons in Washington DC. Dr. Rad uses advanced rhinoplasty techniques designed to minimize down time and to achieve natural and balanced results.

WHICH RHINOPLASTY TECHNIQUE IS BEST?

Rhinoplasty is a life-improving procedure which, when done skillfully with a "closed" approach, results in an aesthetic shape, improved breathing, rapid recovery, invisible scars, minimal swelling, minimal down-time, and immediate improvements.  The "closed" approach requires exceptional artistic nuance and skill, and it is very different from the "open" approach which involves a visible scar, significant swelling and recovery due to unnecessary invasiveness.  In Washington, minimizing invasiveness is crucial, and Dr. Rad performs the "closed" approach to achieve natural, balanced results with a fraction of the recovery time as compared with the "open" technique.

CAN RHINOPLASTY IMPROVE MY BREATHING?

About 80% of people have a deviated septum which impairs breathing, leads to sinus blockages or infections, and impairs sleep.  Over time, sleep loss can lead to fatigue, lack of concentration, poor work performance and health problems.  Rhinoplasty can significantly improve the airflow through the nose which can improve sleep and restfulness. Although rhinoplasty surgery can help you feel more confident about your appearance, it cannot improve self esteem. Dr. Rad does not accept patients that are seeking an extreme makeover or those that are trying to achieve the looks of another person.

WHAT RHINOPLASTY PROCEDURES ARE THERE?

During your consultation Dr. Rad will determine whether rhinoplasty surgery can meet your objectives.  Patients commonly seek to improve the following:

- Dorsal Hump

- Bulbous/Ball Tip

- Drooping Tip

- Wide or Long Nose

- Hanging Columella

- Widened or Flared Nostrils

WHAT TO EXPECT

Dr. Rad uses an innovative “closed” technique with incisions made on the inside of the nostrils, hiding scars from view.  Dr. Rad takes cartilage from the septum which serves to straighten a deviated septum and also to provide material for improving nasal shape.  In certain cases, extra cartilage is required and may be borrowed from the ear or the rib. Controlled breakage of the nasal bones may be necessary for narrowing a wide nose.

Your safety is Dr. Rad's top priority and Dr. Rad works directly with a board certified anesthesiologist and performs all surgeries in an accredited surgery center or hospital operating facility.  Recovery is outpatient and lasts approximately 5-7 days after which you can return to most activities as before.  Other surgeries can be performed at the same time as rhinoplasty, increasing cost-effectiveness and offering comprehensive results and shorter recovery times.

RECOVERY

Pain after surgery is rare, and down time lasts a week or less.  Although temporary nasal congestion is common, bruising and swelling are minimal and typically resolve within a few weeks.   Improvements in nasal shape and breathing are immediate and permanent.  Most patients are able to return to work and to social activities 1 week after surgery.

5 QUESTIONS: VALERIE GRANDURY

5 QUESTIONS: VALERIE GRANDURY

[section asset=question-1.png]

How did your diagnosis of breast cancer inspire you to found Odacité?

Ten years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and told that my chances of survival at 5 years were very low. Once I passed the panic, I realized that cancer was an opportunity for me to change everything, to dare like I never did before. I quit my job in the film business, went back to school to become a health and wellness coach, adopted a raw vegan diet, started yoga and mediation daily and became passionate about removing toxins from my life. The good news is, against all the odds, I’m still here 10 year later and cancer-free. It is through this healing journey that I realized the potential toxicity of personal care products. Finding natural skincare was super difficult for me. We French take skincare very seriously; it is all about research, luxury, perfect penetration and results. I wanted my French skincare without an ounce of toxins; not finding it, I decided to create it.

[section asset=question-2.png]

What were the challenges you faced in creating the preservative-free Fresh Collection products?

[section asset=quotation-mark.png]

"When you create formulas that are truly free of preservative, the efficacy is all about the freshness of the formulation."

- Valerie Grandury [section share_]

When you create formulas that are truly free of preservative, the efficacy is all about the freshness of the formulation. So, our products are made fresh for SHERBER+RAD. We start with a base of fresh organic aloe vera juice, with more than 200 biologically active agents. Aloe vera is one of the most sought after ingredients if you are serious about optimum skin health. Aloe vera is used in hospitals to heal burned skin and backed by a vast amount of pharmacological studies. Aloe vera has been proven to support the health, texture, and integrity of the skin. To the aloe vera we add freshly harvested plant oils, potent cosmeceuticals, and botanical extracts to create fresh formulations that will instantly improve the way you skin feels and looks.

[section asset=question-3.png]

Your products are popular during and after cancer treatment - did you develop any specifically out of your experience as a patient?

Because of the aloe vera base, all the creams are super healing to the skin and the products work wonders on skin that has been affected by either chemo or radiation. My personal experience was realizing how the toxins in personal care products can affect our health and making sure I offer products that will deliver results without an ounce of toxins.

[section single_product=odacite-deep-hydration-masque]
[section caption=The Deep Hydration Masque is an aromatic blend of organic calendula, jojoba, and olive oils which moisturizes deeply, while hyaluronic acid hydrates and plumps up the skin, and a blend of organic tea and lavender soothes the skin.]
[section asset=question-4.png]

How do you layer your Fresh Collection skincare differently when in L.A. versus in Paris?

[section single_product=odacite-ultra-effective-eye-cream]
[section caption=The Ultra Effective Eye Cream contains hyaluronic acid which hydrates the skin, and a blend of olive, jojoba, and evening primrose oil which add effective moisturization. Antioxidants from algae and and pomegranate defend skin from free radicals, and, inspired by the effectiveness of chilled tea bags on the eyes to de-puff, rooibos tea adds both contour-smoothing caffeine and an extra dose of antioxidants.]

In L.A. we are blessed with eternal sunshine and temperature that rarely drop below 59. In Paris you need a lot more hydration. My go-to products in both cities are The Deep Hydration Masque and the Ultra Effective Eye Cream, I just use them differently. My L.A. regimen is daily use of the Deep Hydration Masque every morning while I hike with my dogs (I'm a big fan of multi-tasking). This infuses my skin with the hydration I need for the day, and then I rinse off after the hike. I also apply a rice-size amount of Ultra Effective Eye Cream morning and night. My Paris regimen is to boost my night cream with a pea-sized amount of the Deep Hydration Masque to infuse the skin overnight with the benefits of the hyaluronic acid. I then layer a pea-sized amount of the Ultra Effective Eye Cream on eye and lip area for added hyaluronic acid and a good dose of blue green algae to stimulate cell vitality, renewal, and firming of tissues.

[section asset=question-5.png]

What most inspires you?

Nature and art inspire me. I'm lucky to live in the most beautiful canyon between L.A. and Malibu. When I'm not traveling, I start my day with a morning hike with my dogs to watch the sunrise. There is something absolutely magical about the feeling of a fresh new day and all its possibilities. When I travel, I try to take even one hour to visit a museum or tour art galleries.
